Secret garden

You both found your own
secret garden
summers ago.
A place of magic
tucked under the low branches of trees
where wild flowers grew
and the heartbeat of
that little garden could be heard
as you walked across broken twigs
and pine cones
and gathered acorns
in pockets
already filled with leaves
and sun speckled rocks
and other treasures.
I couldn’t see you
but could hear you
roaming between trees
listening to the sound of your clothes
getting caught up in branches.
I waited at the end of your secret passage
where you both re-emerged
scratched and bruised
with crushed leaves in your hair,
but victorious. -Julie Hamilton
